SFPD trailblazer and daughter mourned by officers at funeral

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The San Francisco law enforcement community, family, and friends gathered for a funeral mass Friday paying their respects to a trailblazer and her daughter.

Ann Mannix, a retired San Francisco Police Department deputy chief, and her 24-year-old daughter, Katie Mannix, were killed in a double murder-suicide inside their home near Mill Valley on Oct. 11. Marin County Sheriff's officials said retired SFPD Sgt. Kevin Mannix shot and killed his 65-year-old wife and their daughter -- before he killed himself.

Ann was a San Francisco native who dedicated more than 30 years old her life to SFPD. She was the first woman ever to join and lead the police department's SWAT team, rose in ranks to deputy chief, and celebrated her retirement in 2021.

The impact of Ann's legacy on the police force was visible at Saint Ignatius Church in San Francisco Friday as more than 100 SFPD officers stood in formation and bagpipers played somber music in the background. Some officers arrived on horseback to pay their last respects, while others carried the casket up to the church.

SFPD Chief Derrick Lew said, "Ann Mannix served with honor and distinction at the SFPD for over 30 years."

Ann was revered by fellow officers. Her obituary states, "The impact she had on the broader San Francisco community entirely exceeded her job responsibilities. Ann loved playing tennis, watching the 49er's and Warrior's, spending time with her dogs ... and bragging to anyone who would listen about her children's accomplishments."

Katie was studying to become a nurse because she wanted to help others. She grew up in Marin County and graduated Redwood High School in 2020.

Katie's obituary writes, "Following in her sister's footsteps, she was studying to become a nurse to help others and had been in clinical rotations while working as a CNA at a local hospital. Katie loved going into the city to laugh with friends, completing her arts and crafts project of the day, trying everything on the menu at a new restaurant with her brother and sister, and playing with her new kitten Suki."

The San Francisco Police Officers Association union said the tragedy is a painful reminder of the importance of mental health.
