(KRON) -- The City of Hayward had an unexpected visitor on Thursday. Officers with the Hayward Police Department and the city's Animal Control Services responded to a seal who found himself in the middle of a roadway.

Hayward PD posted that officers got the seal off the road safely and "made sure their new friend stayed safe" and enjoyed "a little playtime" while they waited for personnel from the Marin Mammal Center to arrive and take over the animal's care.
A photo posted by the police showed the seal (or perhaps sea lion?) looking healthy, if a little out of place, lounging on the pavement with a Hayward PD vehicle in the background.
